The Squirmiest Wormiest Worms of all!!

        Introduction

Worms are an invertebrate. An invertebrate is an animal with NO back bone.

Any of various invertebrates, as those of the phyla Annelida, Nematoda, Nemertea, or Platyhelminthes, having a long, flexible, rounded or flattened body, often without obvious appendages. Any of various crawling insect larvae, such as a grub or a caterpillar, having a soft elongated body. Any of various unrelated animals, such as the shipworm or the slowworm, resembling a worm in habit or appearance.

The definition of worms!!

The term worms means any of numerous long, slender, soft-bodied,legless, bilaterally symmetrical invertebrates, including the flatworm, roundworm,  acanthocephalan, nemertean, gordiacean, and annelid.

The unique qualities of THE WORM!

There are three important types of worms. These are flatworms(tapeworms, planarians, flukes), roundworms(trichinosis, hookworm, pinworm), and annelids.

Roundworms

  Roundworms System
Muscular-Skeletal A roundworm has no skeleton.
Digestion A roundworm has a definite digestive system that runs the length of their bodies. It has a mouth, pharynx, intestine and anus. Many are parasites and live off other animals and plants.
Nervous A roundworm has two nerve cords that transmit impulses in the roundworm.
Circulation A roundworm has no heart or formal blood vessels.
Respiration A roundworm has no formal respiratory system.
Reproduction A roundworm reproduces sexually. The female has an ovary, holds eggs in an oviduct and then passes them to the uterus, where they are fertilized. The male has sperm cells are made in the testis and stored in the vas deferens. When it is time to reproduce, the sperm cells pass through the spicule. Over 200,000 eggs can be deposited at once in the soil once they are fertilized.
Excretion A roundworm has an anus at its rear end and a series of excretory tubes that end in an excretory pore.
Symmetry A roundworm has bilateral symmetry.
Appearance A roundworm is thin, round, smooth and can be up to four feet in length.

Roundworm Definition: A roundworm is any nematode, especially Ascaris lumbricoides,  that infests the intestine of humans and

other mammals.

Roundworm Facts:Roundworms are one of the most common species of intestinal parasites in the world. It is estimated that there are about 50,000 species of roundworms in the world. One of the roundworm facts is that there are only about 15,000 species of roundworms that have been identified and named as yet. Roundworm infection can lead to many serious ailments in humans and animals alike. In fact roundworm infection has been a cause of worry among human beings for a very long time with records of infections found that can be dated back to 2,700 B.C. Roundworms come under the category of the phylum Nematoda and the kingdom Animalia. Any other categories such as class and order of roundworms is still disputed by experts

Flatworms

System Type Flatworms System
Muscular-Skeletal A flatworm has no skeleton. It has tiny bristles called cilia that help it move as well as two layers of muscles under its skin. It has three cell layers called the endoderm, the mesoderm and the ectoderm. They also have the beginnings of a head region.
Digestion A flatworm has a combination digestive/excretory system. It takes food in and gets rid of wastes through the same opening.
Nervous A flatworm has a very simple nervous system with two nerve cords running down either side. It has two simple brains called ganglia, which are simple bundles of nerves. . It has two eyespots that help it sense light.
Circulation A flatworm has a gastrovascular cavity with one opening. It eats small worms, insects and microscopic matter.
Respiration A flatworm takes in oxygen, but has no formal respiratory system.
Reproduction A flatworm reproduces by splitting in two. When a flatworm is split up it immediately forms a new flatworm.
Excretion A flatworm gets rid of wastes through the same opening it takes in food.
Symmetry A flatworm has bilateral symmetry.
Appearance A flatworm can be microscopic or many feet long and is generally very thin.

Flatworm definition:

any worm  of the phylum Platyhelminthes, having bilateralsymmetry and a soft, solid,

usually flattened body, including the planarianstapeworms, and trematodes

platyhelminth.

Flatworm facts:

Flatworms are primarily aquatic, being found in both marine and freshwater environments, as well as some moist land environments.  Because flatworms are acoelomate, their bodies have no "give," meaning that external pressure can easily cause organ damage. There are about 25,000 species of flatworms, making them the largest acoelomate phyla. There are four major classes of flatworms such as Cestoda (tapeworms), Turbellaria (planarians), Trematoda (flukes) and Monogenea.

Annelids

System Type  Annelids System
Muscular-Skeletal Annelids are soft bodied, and their fossils are rare. For movement, they move by peristalsis or sweep their body that helps them crawl or swim.
Digestion  Annelids have a pharynx in their mouth to help them digest food, then the food goes to the esophagus, then the crop, gizzard, intestine, then, comes out of the anus.
Nervous  In some very mobile and active polychaetes the brain is enlarged and more complex, with visible hindbrain, midbrain and forebrain sections. The rest of the central nervous system is generally "ladder-like", consisting of a pair of nerve cords that run through the bottom part of the body and have in each segment paired ganglialinked by a transverse connection.
Circulation Annelids have a close circulation system which is a heart with 5 rings in the interior. This worm also has two major blood vessels, the dorsal blood vessel, and the ventral blood vessel.

Respiration  Some aquatic annelids have thin-walled, feathery gills through which gases are exchanged between the blood and the environment. However, most annelids have no special organs for gas exchange, and respiration occurs directly through the body wall.
Reproduction Annelids have a clitellum which makes a mucus ring for the eggs and sperm to be released.
Excretion  The annelids food has to pass four parts in its body before it reaches the anus where it gets rid of its waste.
Symmetry An annelid has bilateral symmetry.

Definition of an ANNELIDAny segmented of the phylum Annelida, including the earthworms, leeches, and various marine forms.

Annelid Facts: There are six different classes of annelids, earthworms, polychaeta, Clitellata, leeches, myzostomida, archiannelida. Another fact is that it can grow 22 feet in length. One more is that 1 million earthworms can live in one acre of land.
