Mammals are Vertebrates and they have three main groups:
Vertebrates are:
"An animal of a large group distinguished by the possession of a backbone or spinal column, including mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fishes."
Picture of Vertebrates:
Can you tell which one is the Mammal?
What are mammals anyway?
Mammals: any vertebrate of the class Mammalia, having the body more or less covered in hair, nourishing the young with milk from the mammary glands, and, with the exception of egg-laying monotremes, giving birth to live young.
There are 3 types of mammals.
1. Monotremes
2. Marsupials
3. Placental Mammals
Notes and Type by Eunice and Ari
Monotremes have many reptilian traits. They are the mammal that lay eggs, rather than live young, these eggs are soft and leathery. Even after emerging from the egg, a junior monotreme will still drink milk from the mother. Monotremes have a cloaca, which is a cavity at the end of the digestive tract for the release of both excretory and genital products.

Perhaps the most famous of all monotremes, presenting: Perry the Platypus!!!!!!!!!!

Marsupials are mammals with pouches. Most marsupials naturally live in Australia. and baby marsupials are born, they are very, very small, and are usually called joeys. A joey is a young kangaroo, wallaby, or possum and they can be as small as a grain of rice!! When joeys are born, the joey will climb up the mom into her pouch. In the Mom’s pouch are the mammary glands, which produce milk. The baby marsupial feed off of the milk and continue to grow and develop in the pouch until he is ready to face the world. They grow up so fast!

In Placental mammals its development in the mother’s uterus. In the uterus, there is an organ called the placenta which provides the infant with nutrients and oxygen then removes the wastes through the embryo. The embryo lives in a fluid contained by a protective membrane called the amnion. Placental mammals are the most common type of mammals, and they are the best!

Even though they live in the sea, marine mammals are placental mammals. The embryo completes its development in the uterus, and they are nourished with mother's milk. There is a diverse group of 120 species of marine mammals living underwater. All of the marine mammals depend on the ocean for nutrients, yet breath oxygen by surfacing. Although many marine mammals can hold their breath for more that 20 minutes, this fact doesn't enable them to breath under water. A few examples of marine mammals are otters, dolphins, whales, and porpoises. Many marine mammal are endangered and some are at risk of being extinct due to the luxury of their blubber, meat, and sometimes even their fur.
