Reptiles- usually egg-laying vertebrates of the class Reptilia, which include snakes, lizards, crocodiles, turtles, or dinosaurs, they also have an external covering of scales or horny plates and breathing through lungs.

Five main characteristics are: they are cold blooded, lay leathery eggs, they have dry scaly skin, babies hatched in adult form, lay their eggs on land.

 http://www.reptileknowledge.com/articles/article19.php

  • Reptiles are one of the most diverse groups in the animal kingdom.
  • There are more than 8,000 species of reptiles on the planet, and one every continent except for Antartica because it is to cold.
  • Reptiles are one of the longest living animals.
  • Most of the worlds snakes are Non Venomous, only 500 species of snakes are venomous, and only about 30-40 of them are harmful to humans.
  • It is a fact that most humans die from a bee sting more than a snake bite per year.
  • Most kind of reptiles do not tolerate cold very well, but the blandlings turtle is sometimes found swimming under the ice in the great lakes.
  • Snakes and lizards flick their tongues in the air to capture scent particles. They DO NOT use noses like humans.
  • The scales of all snakes(and many lizard species) are made of keratin, which is the same substance that makes up the hair and fingernails of humans.

Answers: Did you know that Iguanas have a third eye? Well they do, it is located in the middle of its forehead.

Snakes can be born with one head, and if they are they will fight each other for food.  Reptiles are definitely cold blooded, they need to lie in the sun to get warm or hide under a rock to get cool. The type of lizard that can run on water is the Common Basilisk and they are the worlds fastest lizards. Did you know some turtles and tortoises can live up to120 to 150 years old. Not all reptiles have a hard shell but they all have scales.  If its hot during the day you will most likely find reptiles under a log or rock, but if its cold they will be laying in the sun. Snakes in fact do not see with their tongue but really smell with the tongue.
