While you read our wiki try to find the answers to these questions:

1. What are the four main types of birds?

2. What is the largest bird known to man?

3. What is a vertebrate?

4. How old are birds?

5. What are some adaptations of birds?

6. What are birds behavior's like?

7. What are some examples of a couple of different vertebrates?

8. What is the oldest bird known to man?

Birds are vertebrates. A vertebrate is a animal that has a backbone. This includes birds but this is only one example. Another example could be a elephant, bat, or even a human. Any type of animal like these goes under the category of vertebrates.

What are birds? Birds are feathered, winged, bipedal, endothermic, egg-laying, vertebrate animals.

Birds are a very old species. They evolved about 150 million years ago. There are approximately 9,865 different bird species in the entire world and they are still counting them today! The oldest bird known to man is called Archaeopteryx Lithographica. This bird lived about 150 million years ago in the Jurassic Period. The largest bird known to man is called the Ostrich. One unique characteristic about birds is that all birds have hallow bones there for they are very aerodynamic and light. Birds also have long bones. In fact, a birds backbone is connected to its skull using only one vertebrate. A birds beak has no teeth and they work by prolonging the upper and the lower jaw. There are four main types of birds. These are Waterfowl, Birds of Prey, Perching Birds, and Flightless Birds. Waterfowl birds are fresh aquatic birds. Birds of prey are are birds that hunt using there incredible senses. Perching birds are birds that have feet adapted for perching on tree branches. Flightless birds are birds that lack the ability to fly.

Below is an amazing video about the wonders of a bird's flight.

Birds are endothermic. Endothermic means having a body temperature that changes with the temperature of its surroundings. All mammals are endothermic also. Bird feathers come in three type; Down, Semi Plume, Bristle, Contour. Feathers are modified scales. Feathers are made of keratin. Feathers might have evolved as adaptation to help keep the bird warm. Birds are different in ways such as flying styles, beak adaptations, foot structures, and behavioral adaptations. The diversity of flying ranges from Hummingbirds flapping their little wings up to 80 times per second to Falcons soaring high in the air to Ostriches not being able to fly at all. Birds have specialized wings made for flight (except for the flightless birds). Their wings are also very light. Behavior of birds include courtship rituals, caring for their offspring, and communication/song.

This video explains how birds evolved over time.

All birds reproduce by laying eggs. Eggs vary in size and color depending on species. Although there is a wide range of egg colors, only two pigments contribute to the color of the shell. Feathers are unique to birds. They are a defining characteristic of the group, meaning simply that if an animal has feathers, then it is a bird. Feather serve many important functions for the bird but the most important of them is that feathers enable birds to fly. Feathers have been enabling birds to fly for a while. Feathers also help bird by providing protection from the elements. Birds undertake seasonal migration between their breeding and wintering grounds. Then during the fall and winter months birds migrate to lower latitudes. Many birds follow a similar route each year. These routes are called migratory flyways.
