Vertabrate or invertabrate?

Fish are vertebrate animals which means they have back bone or spinal column.

What is a fish?

A fish is a cold blooded limbless animal and the first animal to have a jawbone. Fish most likely live in the ocean or in water. A fishes scientific classification is Animalia chordataFish can range in size from the huge 52 feet whale shark to the tiny 0.3 inches stout infant fish.

What are two types of fish?

There are two main types of fish: cartilaginous, which have a flexible skeleton composed entirely of cartilage, and bony fish which do not. Cartilaginous fish include sharks and rays. Tropical fish make the bony fish family because they have skeletons made of bone.

Characteristics of fish!

Some fish have scales, but many species of fish lack them. The basic purpose of scales is to give the fish external protection. The sizes of scales vary from tiny embedded scales to some that reach 10 cm in length. Fins on fish usually serve as aids to swim, but like the frogfish they can also be used for gliding or crawling.  Some animals even evolved from fish such as the tiktaalik roseae. This fossil was found in 2006 and dated back 375 million years ago. The first fish on earth were called the Agnathans which are commonly called jawless fish. Those fish live today as fish called hagfish and lampreys, but they do not resemble ancient Agnathans. They lived from 510 to 350 m.y.a.
